Four Steps to Establishing a Self-Care Routine You'll Maintain

Life can be overwhelming. It often seems like the pressures of work, family, and home expand to fill every moment of the day. You may want to meditate, practice yoga, or develop a mindful habit to manage stress, but despite your best efforts, self-care consistently ends up last on your list.

Being your best self starts with feeling grounded and centered. However, that’s hard to achieve if you’re constantly moving from one task to the next. So, what’s the solution?

Taking time for self-care.

It’s hard to remember with the busy lives we lead day to day. However… If you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be able to effectively help others—not for long, anyway.

When it comes to self-care, there’s no official rule book. Try to be proactive.

Self-care is crucial for your mental, physical, and emotional health. If you ignore it, life often forces the issue by throwing challenges your way. You can either choose to schedule time for self-care, or risk having a health crisis that takes the choice out of your hands.

Once you decide to prioritize self-care, it’s time to be practical. There are many ways to recharge. While jetting off to a tropical destination or booking a spa day sounds ideal, even small moments of mindfulness each day can be just as effective.

Here are some steps to help you create a self-care ritual and stick to it:

  1. Let go of the “shoulds.” Meditation can be a great way to feel grounded, but if sitting still for 20 minutes isn’t your thing, that’s okay. Don’t force yourself into a practice that feels more like a task. This is your time, and it should be enjoyable—not just another item on your to-do list.

  2. Personalize your ritual. Create a wellness routine that allows you to disconnect and be fully present. Whether it’s a short, mindful walk, watering your plants, stargazing, meditating, soaking in a warm bath, or practicing a few yoga poses, choose something that helps you slow down and reset emotionally.

  3. Schedule with intention. Try to “bookend” your day with your self-care routine by setting aside time in the morning and before bed. Get up a bit earlier to enjoy some quiet time before the day begins. Then, at night, take a few minutes to unwind and let go of the day’s stress, preparing yourself for restful sleep.

  4. Remember, self-care isn’t selfish. Don’t feel guilty about taking time for yourself. When you prioritize your well-being, everyone around you benefits too. A centered and grounded you positively impacts your family, friends, and colleagues.

Of course designating time in your hot tub can be one of the greatest ways to get some self care time in. Give some of these tips a try and start your self care routine today.
